UK music licensing company, PPL, has announced a revised tariff for Small Residential Hotels and Guesthouses. The changes will come into effect on 1st January 2017 and are the product of a consultation that was launched earlier in the year with licensees and trade bodies to discuss a revised tariff to cover playing background music in public areas and the supply of music to guest bedrooms. The original tariff was introduced over 25 years ago and the changes have been brought in to make sure that the tariff remains as fair as possible and helps to support smaller premises, whilst reflecting change and clarification in the law.

Owners or managers of small residential hotels or guesthouses will now be able to purchase a licence from PPL to cover the use of background music in communal areas (including via TV/radio) for £66.56 plus VAT.  A licence to cover the supply of music to hotel bedrooms will cost £50.33 plus VAT.  Businesses will only be charged for the licences that are appropriate to their specific needs and PPL’s licensing support team is on hand to offer advice and guide licensees through the process.

The scope of the tariff has now been amended so that it only applies to hotels with 15 bedrooms or fewer.  Hotels or guesthouse playing recorded music that falls within PPL’s repertoire with up to 15 bedrooms and with facilities only available to resident guests will be required to secure a Small Residential Hotels and Guesthouses licence.  In order to retain a fair approach to licensing, PPL will not charge premises with up to three guest bedrooms, provided that additional criteria is also met. More details are available at

PPL’s repertoire covers nearly all commercially released music. Larger hotels playing music from PPL’s repertoire with 16 bedrooms or more should contact PPL’s licensing support team or visit the above web page to find the relevant licence for their premises.

Existing PPL licensees who will be affected by the changes should already have been contacted by the organisation in order to talk through the revisions.  Any additional queries about transitional arrangements can be made by contacting PPL on 020 7534 1450 from 8am to 6pm (Monday – Friday) or by emailing

Businesses who do not have an existing PPL licence can purchase a new one by calling 020 7534 1070 or emailing
