PPL’s Peter Leathem is elected to the board of SCAPR - the international umbrella organisation for performer CMOs

Leathem elected to the board of SCAPR, the Societies’ Council for the Collective Management of Performers’ Rights. He has been a director of PPL since 2006 and Chief Executive since 2012.

Peter Leathem, Chief Executive Officer of PPL, the UK music industry’s collective management organisation (CMO) for performers and record companies has been elected to the board of SCAPR.  SCAPR is the Societies’ Council for the Collective Management of Performers’ Rights and operates as an international platform for the development of the practical cooperation and collaborative working between performers’ CMOs.

SCAPR strives to improve the exchange of data and performers’ rights payments across borders and currently brings together 60 CMOs from around the world.  The organisation’s primary aim is to improve the efficiency of rights management.  SCAPR convenes regularly to progress various initiatives including IPD (International Performer Database), VRDB (Virtual Recording Database) and performers rights in developing markets.  Peter was elected alongside Xavier Blanc of SPEDIDAM (France) and Agnieszka Parzuchowska-Janczarska of STOART (Poland) for a term of four years. They join various senior figures from performer CMOs from across Europe and Canada on the board.

PPL works on behalf of tens of thousands of performers from emerging grassroots artists through to established session musicians and festival headliners.  The company has a market-leading international collections business to help ensure its members can receive payment where their music is played around the world.  PPL now has 90 international agreements in place across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. The company has collected over £355 million internationally since 2006.

Peter Leathem, Chief Executive Officer at PPL said, “Whilst we have been active within SCAPR for some years now, this appointment to the Board takes our involvement to a new level. Collaboration with performer CMOs around the world is a key part of PPL’s operations and I look forward to supporting the drive by SCAPR to improve efficiency and maximise revenues for performer members through the organisation’s various initiatives.”

Peter Leathem has been a director of PPL since 2006 and has held a number of leadership positions in the company since joining in 2002 as the Head of Legal and Business Affairs. He is also a director of VPL (the music video licensing company), PPL PRS Ltd (the recently-launched public performance licensing joint venture company with PRS for Music), UK Music (the umbrella organisation which represents the recorded, published and live sectors of the British music industry), the British Copyright Council (which represents the broader copyright community) and is Chairman of the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (a healthcare charity for those in the performing arts).
