To celebrate the August bank holiday, we teamed up with the Bauer City 2 network to broadcast an exclusive chart of the Most Played Motown Songs of the 21st Century.

Aggregated using PPL’s UK airplay data, the chart collates those Motown tunes which have been played in public spaces across the nation in pubs, restaurants, shops, offices, many other business types, and broadcast on TV, radio and online, since the year 2000.

While timeless classics from The Temptations (Papa Was A Rollin' Stone), Mary Wells (My Guy), Marvin Gaye (I Heard It Through The Grapevine), and The Supremes (Baby Love) all feature, Stevie Wonder dominates the chart with a staggering 17 song entries in the top 100 list, proving to be the most popular Motown act to be played in the UK today.

As well as those performers commonly associated with the famous 60s Motown era, the PPL chart also includes 70s disco and funk tracks, 80s pop hits, and 90s ballads by artists signed to the label throughout the decades. Lionel Richie’s 80s classic ‘All Night Long’ tops the chart.

Russell Chant, PPL said: “This Motown chart will have you ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’, ‘Dancing in the Street’ and hoping there’s a ‘Heatwave’. Full of sing-along favourites, it really is a great playlist that showcases the longevity and popularity Motown!”
