PPL signs Equality & Diversity Charter for Music

The UK music industry today launched a commitment to increase equality and diversity within the commerical music sector.

The Equality & Diversity Charter for Music is the industry's plan to encourage organisations, businesses and individuals to actively improve equality and diversity, in order to benefit creatively and commerically from the inclusion of a diverse range of creative and business talent.

The charter includes agreeing to practices such as recruiting from a wide talent pool, improving equality and diversity at senior decision-making levels, participating or running activities that promote equality and diversity in the music industry and to share any successful methods with the industry.

All the founding members of UK Music, including PPL, support the charter.

Keith Harris, Director of Performer Affairs, and Peter Leathem, CEO, attended the launch in support of the charter. Peter is pictured right signing the charter.

Speaking at the event, Peter Leathem said: "PPL is pleased to be part of the Equality & Diversity Charter within the music industry. It is important that companies within the industry adopt people strategies that provide individuals from a variety of backgrounds access to the same opportunities in the workplace. Always ensuring fair practices are in place and that decisions are based on the skills and abilities of an individual."

Keith, also spokesperson for the Alliance for Diversity in Music & Media (ADMM), said: "There is more we can do to enable access to our business to those from different social and cultural backgrounds. The Equality & Diversity Charter marks a good start in helping this industry realise its potential."

UK Music aims to secure 100 signatories to the charter in 2012. UK Music is the umbrella organisation that represents the collective interests of the UK's commercial music industry - from artists, musicians, songwriters and composers, to record labels, music managers, music publishers, studio producers and music licensing organisations. The members of UK Music are: AIM, BASCA, BPI, MMF, MPA, MPG, MU, PPL and PRS for Music.
