PPL backs ‘Make It Fair’ campaign against AI copyright threat
PPL is supporting the Make It Fair campaign to oppose government plans that could allow Artificial Intelligence firms to use the work of music creators without permission or paying them.
The proposed changes would shift the responsibility onto artists to ‘opt out’ rather than requiring AI firms to seek permission.
The plans would seriously undermine the music industry’s efforts to grow the £7.6 billion it contributes to the economy and play its part at the heart of the Government’s industrial strategy.
To highlight the issue, 1,000 musicians have released a silent album, ‘Is This What We Want?’. The album features recordings of empty studios and performance spaces, representing the potential impact of the government’s proposals.
Kate Bush, Sam Fender, Annie Lennox and Damon Albarn are among those backing the protest. More than 100 PPL members are credited on the album.
The Make It Fair campaign is urging the public to support creators by contacting their local MPs, calling for stronger protections and fair compensation when AI firms use creative content.
